Silent Brain Infarctions in Patients
نویسنده
چکیده
Background and Purpose: The relative frequency of computed tomographic evidence of old cerebral infarctions without prior history of stroke, and their effect on shortand long-term outcome of patients with first-ever ischemic stroke, are currently unknown. Silent infarctions may relate to specific risk factors and may influence the rate of survival free of handicap. Methods: We studied the prevalence of such lesions in patients registered with SEPIVAC, a communitybased survey of stroke incidence and outcome in the Sixth Local Health Unit of Umbria, Italy. Of 375 first-ever strokes, 209 patients with cerebral infarction (computed tomogram done within 30 days after the stroke) were included in this study. Computed tomograms were reviewed blindly, and cases were classified

The ‘silence’ of silent brain infarctions may be related to chronic ischemic preconditioning and nonstrategic locations rather than to a small infarction size
OBJECTIVE Silent brain infarctions are the silent cerebrovascular events that are distinguished from symptomatic lacunar infarctions by their 'silence'; the origin of these infarctions is still unclear. This study analyzed the characteristics of silent and symptomatic lacunar infarctions and sought to explore the mechanism of this 'silence'. METHODS In total, 156 patients with only silent bra...
متن کاملMicrobleeds and Silent Brain Infarctions Are Differently Associated with Cognitive Dysfunction in Patients with Advanced Periventricular Leukoaraiosis
BACKGROUND Leukoaraiosis, microbleeds, and silent brain infarctions are phenotypes of small vessel disease. Leukoaraiosis is the most prevalent, and advanced periventricular leukoaraiosis is regarded as a strong predictor of cognitive dysfunction. Microbleeds and silent brain infarctions sometimes coexist with leukoaraiosis. This study aims to analyze the effects of microbleeds and silent brain...

متن کاملSilent subcortical brain infarction
Introduction: The silent brain lesions detected by MRI were fairly common not only in first-ever stroke but also in normal elderly subjects. Some recent studies show the possible role of silent sub-cortical brain infarction in ischemic stroke. The aim of this study was to evaluate the frequency of silent sub-cortical brain infarction in acute first-ever ischemic stroke. Methods: In this descrip...
متن کاملSILENT BRAIN INFARCTION IN STROKE PATIENTS: A PILOT DOUBLE-CENTER STUDY
Silent Brain Infarcts (SBI) are associated with an increased risk of subsequent stroke. SBI are incidentally revealed by CT or MRI executed in stroke patients. A prospective study was undertaken involving 200 consecutive patients aged >45 years with brain infarct admitted in University of Alberta Hospital, Canada (100 patients) and Valie-Asr Hospital, Iran (100 patients) in 2003. Patients w...
